
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26 1926 - October 18 1999) was an American singer and actress who toured for more than 40 years. London is a torch singer loved for her soft, soothing vocals and smooth contralto voice, recorded more than thirty albums of pop and jazz classics between 1955 and 1969. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 was her rendition of "Cry Me a River" the track she had introduced to her debut album. In addition to the recording, London was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her portrayal of nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency!. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her professional career began acting as an actress as she was an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's long and successful acting career started around 1944, when she appeared in films. These included roles as the lead female role in a variety of westerns. She also starred with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958), and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording agreement with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This marked the start of her professional music career. Her final studio album in the year 1969, but was able to continue to make a name for herself as the lead female character of nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency! (1972-1979) and co-starred with Bobby Troup. The show was created by her former husband Jack Webb.
